Hisense vs TCL: Country, TV Platforms and Manufacturing

Major Appliances

Brands covered in this guide

Hisense and TCL are separate Chinese companies. Hisense was founded in Qingdao in 1969, while TCL was founded in Huizhou in 1981. Both sell TVs and home appliances globally, but they have different corporate structures, display businesses, software combinations, and product ranges.

There is no useful brand-wide answer to which company makes the better TV. The practical comparison is between exact models sold in the same country.

Are Hisense and TCL the same company?

No. Hisense operates through Hisense Group Holdings and a number of listed and private businesses. Its portfolio spans televisions, home appliances, display technology, energy, automotive electronics, and international brands including Toshiba TV and Gorenje.

TCL is a separate group whose consumer and display operations include televisions, home appliances, mobile devices, and TCL CSOT display panels. Neither company owns the other.

Where are Hisense and TCL from?

Hisense began as Qingdao No. 2 Radio Factory in Shandong province and adopted the Hisense name in 1993. TCL began in Huizhou, Guangdong province, and grew from consumer electronics into televisions, displays, mobile products, and home appliances.

Both now operate manufacturing, research, sales, and service organizations in multiple countries. A TV assembled outside China can still come from a Chinese brand. Brand origin and final assembly location answer different questions.

How their display businesses differ

TCL emphasizes vertical integration through TCL CSOT, its semiconductor display business. TCL says CSOT panel and module production supports its TV manufacturing strategy. On retail products, TCL commonly uses names such as QD-Mini LED and NXTVISION.

Hisense combines its television business with picture-processing, Mini-LED, RGB-MiniLED, and Laser TV products. ULED is a Hisense marketing name used across LCD-based televisions with different combinations of backlight, color, and image-processing technology. It is not a separate panel type equivalent to OLED.

These brand terms do not provide enough information to compare picture quality. Panel type, local-dimming implementation, peak brightness, viewing angle, processing, and the exact model year matter more.

Smart TV software varies by model and country

Neither brand uses one operating system on every television.

Hisense’s US range includes Google TV, Roku TV, Fire TV, VIDAA, and Xumo models. TCL’s US support catalog includes Google TV, Roku TV, and Fire TV families. Other regions use different combinations, and an app available on one platform or country may be missing from another.

Before buying, check:

  • the full regional model number;
  • the installed TV operating system;
  • whether required streaming apps are available in that country;
  • tuner and broadcast compatibility;
  • HDMI features and refresh-rate support on the exact inputs;
  • local warranty and authorized service coverage.

Their sports partnerships are not the same

Hisense is an Official Sponsor of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. FIFA says the relationship covers global marketing rights and display-related fan experiences, following earlier World Cup and FIFA technology work.

TCL should not be described as a 2026 FIFA World Cup sponsor. TCL is a Worldwide Olympic and Paralympic Partner in home audiovisual equipment and home appliances under an agreement running through 2032. These are separate sports partnerships.

Which brand should you shortlist?

Choose by model and region rather than country of origin alone.

  • Shortlist Hisense when the exact model has the screen size, TV platform, tuner, and local support you need.
  • Shortlist TCL under the same criteria, especially when comparing products that use different CSOT panels or smart TV platforms.
  • Do not transfer a review score from a US model to a similarly named model sold in Europe, Australia, or Asia without checking the specifications.
  • Treat large promotional claims as starting points for comparison, not as independent performance tests.

For an international buyer, the best choice is the model with the stronger combination of verified specifications, local app support, warranty, and price in the market where it will be used.
